Before World War I: in the Arab region there was the Ottoman empire, and in this period the U.S. was seen as a benevolent power: it was a big and powerful state but not colonial (differently from the UK and France).

Treaty of SÉVRES: it marked the dissolution of the Ottoman empire ➔ international mandates in Syria and Palestine.

President WILSON ➔ 14 points ➔ self-determination principle: states in the Arab region perceived their freedom and wanted to build their own history ➔ the U.S. were defined personae gratae (1920).
