Chiara Neto

Dr. Chiara Neto is presently a Lecturer at the University of Sydney and an active researcher in the field of liquid-solid interfaces and liquid film stability. The results of her research can be summarised under three strongly connected headings:
1. Micro-fluidics. Direct measurements of drainage forces with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) showed, for the first time, clear evidence of boundary slip in Newtonian liquids. These findings are relevant to the micro-control of liquid flow and confined biological systems.
2. Dewetting of thin liquid films. Neto worked together with one of the world-leading groups in the field of thin film stability and dewetting (S. Herminghaus, K. Jacobs, Germany), contributing significantly to this field with the study of a novel dewetting pattern, dubbed “satellite holes”, that develops upon dewetting of thin polystyrene films. More recently, she developed a new application of dewetting in polymer film bilayers for protein adsorption.
3. Characterisation of adsorption on solid substrates. Neto investigated the adsorption of molecular aggregates onto solid substrates, in particular single macromolecules (DNA plasmids), nano-particles, and cubosomes. For this purpose she made extensive use of AFM, obtaining expertise in high resolution imaging and in situ imaging of soft matter.
