The analysis of the gathered data used the statistical tools like
alpha coefficient to determine reliability of the questionnaires, the
weighted mean, and the ANOVA f test (one way) to verify the significant
difference in the assessment of the three respondents as to the
management of intercollegiate sports program.
According to the overall mean scores in the area of training
program, the athletes, coaches, and physical education teachers
evaluated it as fully managed, fully managed, and managed respectively.
Based on the overall mean scores, the sports facilities are
assessed as managed by the three groups of respondents and which
means that there is no significant difference in their assessment.
The over-all mean scores in the area of human resources imply that
there is a significant difference on the assessment of the three
respondents which they correspondingly assessed it as fully managed,
managed, and managed.
The summary of the assessment on the management of the sports
program in the area of academic tie up illustrates that there is no
significant difference on the assessment of the three groups based on the
over-all mean scores presented which has the same managed verbal
interpretation.
The area of budget allocation, it also depicts that there is no
significant difference on the assessment of the three respondents with all
having a managed interpretation.
The summary of ANOVA on the assessment of the three groups or
respondents exemplifies that the five areas have different decisions which
are: the hypothesis is rejected in the training program; accepted in sports
facilities; rejected in human resources; and accepted both in academic tie
up and budget allocation.
The action plan that can be proposed is through the employment of
the sports development plan where it comprises the goals, task or actions,
people involved, timescale, cost, monitoring, and feedback that will help
create specific objectives to be attained by the management of
intercollegiate sports program.
Based on the results of the study and the conclusions
consequential from it, the following recommendations were formulated:
1.) In relation to the training program, proper scheduling of team
training would be very beneficial in making the facilities readily
accessible for athletes and coaches. In order to upgrade the
knowledge of coaches of the different sports, the school needs to
send them to different coaching seminars. The training objectives
should be attained after each session through the coaches being
open-minded for suggestions. The training should starts as
scheduled and should have an ample time to inculcate the right
knowledge to athletes wherein the coaches would make use of a
quality timeframe of the practice.
2.) In the area of sports facilities, the administration needs to upgrade
the sports facilities of the school like the flooring of the court,
provides adequate badminton courts, sports equipment and
practice uniforms, and to upgrade the weights room. The school
also needs to install additional water stations and to provide
audio/video materials for listening and viewing materials as the
athletes take their rest.
3.) On the part of human resources, the problems of the team
addressed to administration should be taken into action and the
center for human kinetics should always aim to upgrade of the
status of the sports by having a proper communication through an
open forum meeting so that all the necessary suggestions and
recommendations by the involved parties should be taken due
consideration.
4.) In the area of academic tie-up, the school needs to assist the
athletes in their academics and to guide them in their future by
providing tutorial classes and counseling program. In this way, the
athletes will have a great future ahead of them not only limiting their
capabilities in the field of sports but also in the entire aspect of their
potentiality.
5.) The Center for Human kinetics should maintain the transparency of
work to continuously enhance the sports program by increasing the
budget through proper justifications. The center should also get a
marketing officer that will help invite sponsorships and to look for
alumni of the school that can help assist in financing the operations
of the management of the intercollegiate sports program.
Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Trinity University of Asia has been competing in the battle arena of
sports in the past years since it started joining NCAA in 1974. The school
is aware of the needs to enhance the talents of athletes and to provide a
quality program that is very vital for the improvement of sports in the
school. Presently, there are about 148 athletes participating in the
different fields of sports. In order to assess the management of
intercollegiate sports program in connection with the performance of
student-athletes in their academic tie-up, the sports facilities that would
help develop the physical development of student-athletes, human
resources, training program of coaches, and the budget allocation, a study
should be developed. The researcher aims to focus the study on the
extramural program on which the student-athletes and coaches are
participating to give ways of improving the management of the
intercollegiate sports program.
The school has to improve its intercollegiate sports program
considering that the institution has just turned into a university effective
July 18, 2006. The administration must also focus their attention in
2
uplifting the status of the institution in terms of performance output in the
area of athletic activities.
Management refers to the tasks or activities involved in managing
an organization: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. (Hellriegel
et al, p.8, 1999) Planning involves defining organizational goals and
proposing ways to reach them. Organizing is the process of creating a
structure of relationships that will enable employees to carry out
management’s plans and meet organizational goals. Leading involves
communicating with and motivating others to perform the tasks necessary
to achieve the organization’s goals. Lastly, controlling is the process by
which a person, group, or organization consciously monitors performance
and takes corrective action.
Training Program is important to coaches and athletes to enhance
their capabilities in their field of sports. It prepares the coaches and
athletes for the extramural games bringing forth a competitive spirit.
The sports facilities that are used by the student-athletes should be
adequate enough. In order for the student athletes to perform very well,
they should have proper training and adequate sport facilities. They
should be exposed in different extramural competitions which provide
3
them the opportunity to display their skills and talents against other
schools.
In any organization, there is always an allocated budget to be able
to carry out the task at hand. The management of an organization can
only be fully achieved to meets its objectives if there is financial support.
The things discussed will always boil down to the academic tie-up
that would be the core of the student-athletes to be qualified in
participating extramural events. They should pass 60 percent of their
subjects in order for them to have the chance to represent the school.
Background of the Study
The Auditorium-Gymnasium which is also known as the Dr. Henry
Noble Gym was inaugurated in 1973. The first athletic director of school
was Lauro Mumar. The institution joined the National Collegiate Athletic
Association in 1974. In school year 1981-1982, the organization won the
NCAA Juniors Volleyball and Juniors Chess Championship. In 25
th
of July
1982, the school hosted the 58
th
edition of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association. In school year 1983-1984, the school won the NCAA Juniors
Track and Field Championship. In school year 1984-1985, the institution
won the NCAA Juniors Basketball Championship. But in 1986; the
4
organization took a leave of absence from the said tournament. The
institution joined the Colleges and Universities Sports Association (CUSA)
in its 6
th
season and the traditional opening was held at the Ninoy Aquino
Stadium in Vito Cruz, Manila last August 24, 2000.
The sport events were participated in by the following colleges and
universities namely: Alejandro Colleges, Central Colleges of the
Philippines, De Ocampo Memorial School, La Consolacion College, Las
Piñas College, Manuel L. Quezon University, Metro Manila College,
Philippine College of Criminology, Philippine Maritime Institute, Philippine
Christian University, St. Claire College, St. Jude College, Technological
Institute of the Philippines, Trinity University of Asia, University of the
Assumption Pampanga.
The first sport events that the school participated in the 6
th
season
of Colleges and Universities Sports Association were basketball (Seniors,
Women, and Juniors), Volleyball (Men and Women), Badminton, Table
tennis, and Chess. Trinity College placed 2

season of CUSA was Technological Institute of the Philippines.
During the 7
th
season of CUSA, St. Claire College and La
Consolacion College left the league and were replaced by Gregorio
5
Araneta University Foundation. Alejandro College took a leave of
absence from the said league. Cheer dancing and swimming were added
in the events. The opening ceremony was held at the Araneta Coliseum
on which Metro Manila College was the host school. The school won the
Badminton championship (women’s division) and swimming championship
but unluckily did not gained any place.
During the 8
th
season of CUSA. PATTS College of Aeronautics
came back to the league and soccer was added as an additional event. In
2002, during the same season, The Physical Education and Athletics
Department was changed to Center for Human Kinetics. In the same year,
on June 21, the institution inaugurated the Aqua pool. The organization
has regained its momentum and placed 2
nd
runner up over-all.
The Center for Human Kinetics later on organized and added
teams, sports clubs and dance troupe like: the swimming team, soccer
team, pep squad, dance troupe, Arnis, Karate, and Taekwondo
(ARKADO) club, and Darts club.
In the past years, the school has participated in leagues, activities,
and extramural events such as:

During the 9
th
season of Colleges and Universities Sports
Association, The school placed 1
st
runner up in the over-all sports events.
Philippine Maritime Institute was the host team.
The 10
th
season of Colleges and Universities Sports Association,
the institution was the host school and won 1
st
runner-up in the over-all
standing.
The opening ceremony of the 11
th
season of Colleges and
Universities and Sports Association was held in Araneta Coliseum. The
school has maintained its position placing 1
st
runner-up over-all.
The past and present physical education/athletic directors were
handled by various persons who managed the sports program of the
school. They are responsible for administering the different intercollegiate
sports event that includes the athletes, coaches, and physical education
teachers of the school.
As one of the student-athletes of Trinity University of Asia, it has
inspired to do a research on the management of intercollegiate sports
program of the school. The researcher has played for the institution for
more than two years and would like to seek answers that will alleviate the
8
management of intercollegiate sports program and to improve the
performance of the athletes.
It is in this context, that the researcher pursued this research study
in order to enhance the output of athletes of the school.
Conceptual Framework
This study revolves around the key administrative concepts as
mentioned by Treumper (1993) that the understanding of management of
a certain organization will not be achieved unless one knows the meaning
of authority, power, delegation, responsibility, and accountability. These
concepts are not only for administrators but also for all the staff members,
coaches, and athletes. These concepts are interrelated and an effective
administrator applies them in a judicious manner for the benefit of the
management of the intercollegiate sports program. The key administrative
concepts are defined as:
Authority is the right given to a person to act in certain ways to
carry out tasks of the organization. It is the power given to a person
because of the office he or she holds. The authority given to a person
should be spelled out in the job description of the position and should be
commensurate with the responsibility.
9
Power is ability to command or control others. Some power comes
from the authority given to a person because of the position he or she
holds. For example, the manager of a certain organization can fire and
hire employees is able to control and affect the behavior of others.
Delegation is the shifting of authority to another person.
Administrative duties tend to overwhelm people who do not know how or
are afraid to give authority to other staff people. It is important to specify
the tasks to be done and give the person the authority to carry out the
duties involved.
Responsibility is the obligation to carry out assigned tasks in an
acceptable way. When accepting a position or job, the administrator
accepts responsibility for the duties involved. An administrator may
delegate authority to one or more colleagues for a specific assignment or
for a designated facet of a program. However, the administrator is still held
responsible by superiors for all the activities.
Accountability is the responsibility to successfully perform a task or
duty. Administrators are responsible to someone for their actions. People
who accept administrative responsibility are accountable for their actions.
